Western Australia Premier discusses renewable energy, agricultural development with Sri Lanka
Ada Derana: Sri Lanka’s President Ranil Wickremesinghe recently attended the 7th Indian Ocean Conference in Perth, Australia at the invitation of the India Foundation and the Australian Government.
President Wickremesinghe delivered the keynote address at the conference on 9 February, focusing on the theme “Towards a Stable and Sustainable Indian Ocean”.
Furthermore, Premier Roger Cook of Western Australia met with President Wickremesinghe as part of the President’s official itinerary in Perth for the Indian Ocean Conference.
During the discussions, the Premier had conveyed his state’s keen interest in renewable energy and agricultural development, along with establishing direct aviation connections between Sri Lanka and Perth. He had emphasized Perth’s strategic location on the Indian Ocean as an opportunity for South Asian nations to foster closer ties with the broader Australian region.
President Wickremesinghe had highlighted Sri Lanka’s on-going efforts to develop its renewable energy sector, while underscoring the country’s vast potential in this area. Additionally, the President had outlined Sri Lanka’s modernization program in agriculture and extended an invitation to the Western Australian Premier to promote investment in this sector.
President Wickremesinghe had invited the Premier to visit Sri Lanka and explore the investment opportunities in the country.

The ongoing economic activities in the country has opened up a host of business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka. Two of the key areas that are on the expansion path are the power and agriculture industries. The country’s target of becoming an emerging business destination in the South Asian region have further expanded the opportunities in Sri Lanka’s power and agriculture industries. It is in such a backdrop that the leadership in Western Australia is looking at exploring the emerging opportunities in these two industries. Sri Lankan authorities are also in the process of attracting foreign businesses/investors to the country by showcasing the many opportunities through promotional campaigns. Given the growing ties between Sri Lanka and Australia, Australian businesses/investors could confidently explore the growing opportunities in Sri Lanka while also looking at forming partnerships or joint ventures with local businesses with the aim of further expansion.
