Two cruise ships call at Sri Lanka’s Hambantota International Port.

Two cruise ships MV Arius and MV Gem, each with capacity to carry more than 800 passengers, last week called at  Sri Lanka’s Hambantota International Port (HIP) for a month-long layup.
The crews of the two ships are to remain on board during this period.
“Hambantota International Port provides the best facilities in the region for all kinds of vessels of any size from small- and medium-sized ships to large tankers. We provide safe mooring, security for ship and personnel, ship supplies, etc. These types of vessels contribute to increasing awareness among ship owners and ship managers of the diverse portfolio of services HIP can offer,” HIP General Manager – Commercial and Marketing Lance Zuo has been quoted as saying.
According to reports, this service offered by HIP also supports the local communities of Hambantota, who supply fresh produce and other necessities for the laid-up ships.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s Hambantota Port, which is the youngest international port in the country, continues to record an increase in operations thereby showing a clear growth in the country’s maritime industry. Sri Lanka’s geographical positioning in the Indian Ocean and the many trade agreements as well as trade concessions enjoyed by the country have all helped boost the business opportunities in the country’s maritime industry. There has been a steady growth in the country’s ports, shipping and logistics sectors despite Sri Lanka facing many challenges. Sri Lanka’s overall development programme has also covered the country’s maritime industry and given the growing business potential in the sector, foreign businesses/investors could confidently explore the opportunities in the industry and its sub-sectors.
