Sri Lanka’s tea estates record all-time high prices at tea auction
Daily FT: Mattakelle Estate located in Talawakelle which is renowned for producing high quality teas established an all-time record, at the first tea auction for the year 2022 held on 5 January, by securing an attractive price of Rs. 1,200 per kg for a Dust1 grade, in the Western High Grown Elevation. This line of tea was purchased by Euro-Scan Exports Ltd.
Mattakelle Estate is managed by Talawakelle Tea Estates PLC and the teas were successfully marketed and sold by John Keells PLC.
Meanwhile, an invoice of BOP1 Grade from Delmar Estate – Halgranoya secured an all-time Colombo tea auction record price of Rs. 960 per kg in the Uda Pussellawa Category.
This tea was purchased by Vintage Teas Ltd., who is a leading exporter of quality tea. This was sold through the catalogue of Lanka Commodity Brokers Ltd. Delmar is one of the larger tea factories in the Uda Pussellawa region, and is managed by Uda Pussellawa Plantations PLC, which recently changed hands to Browns Plantations Ltd.
The estate management and factory staff place a high level of importance on good quality manufacturing standards which are closely supervised at different stages of production.

Sri Lanka’s tea industry has recorded a steady growth by showing an increase in the prices fetched by Ceylon tea in the market – be it local or global. Sri Lanka’s tea authorities are engaged in promotional campaigns overseas while also working to further develop the country’s tea production line through value additions. The many trade agreements as well as concessions enjoyed by the country have also helped Sri Lanka’s tea exports. Given the expansion in Sri Lanka’s tea industry, foreign businesses/investors could confidently explore the growing opportunities in the industry.
