Sri Lanka’s President declares open last two phases of Southern Expressway
President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa together with Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa declared open the last two phases of the Southern Expressway on Sunday (23) and Sri Lanka’s Road Development Authority (RDA) has said the complete expressway is now open for vehicular traffic.
The last two phases, which were completed are from Matara to Hambanthota which is a stretch of nearly 38 kilometers.
The RDA has reportedly stated that travelers can now reach Kataragama from Kottawa in three and a half hours.
The new stretch of highway also cuts across several ecologically sensitive zones – the Nilwala River and the Kirulakele area as well as the Dandeniya Aparekka Reserve which is considered a high biodiversity ecosystem.

Successive governments of Sri Lanka have given prominence to the development of the country’s road network in order to develop connectivity among the districts that is a fundamental for economic development. Therefore Sri Lanka is currently in the process of constructing highways to further boost the country’s economy.
