Sri Lanka’s President calls for the building of an economy based on agriculture

President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena has called for the building of an economy based on agriculture.
The President made this statement during his address to the nation to mark Sri Lanka’s 71st Independence Day celebrations on Monday (4).
“We are a people who established our own national identity from the beginning,” the President has said.
“Therefore on this auspicious occasion, I would like to emphasize that the time has come to build the economy of our country on the foundation of agriculture.”
Sri Lanka’s export economy was based on agricultural exports such as tea, rubber and coconut as well as spices during the colonial rule. However, local exports have diversified during the past few years.
“Having gained independence from imperialist rules, as a nation we expected a political, socio-economic forward march with a unique national identity, free of colonial shackles,” President Sirisena has said.

OSL take:

The statement by the Sri Lankan President is somewhat an open invitation for foreign businesses engaged in agriculture to explore business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector. Interested foreign businesses could look at introducing the latest technologies and trends in the global agriculture industry to Sri Lanka and also look at forming joint ventures with local companies with the aim of producing agricultural goods for export markets as well.
