Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail wins big at British Guild of Travel Writers International Tourism Awards

Daily FT: Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail won the ‘Best Wider World Tourism Project’ at the British Guild of Travel Writers International Tourism Awards (ITA) recently.
The nominations included five countries, with Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail taking the first place. The Pekoe Trail was nominated by the British Guild of Travel Writers members Petra Shepherd and Jessica Vincent.
Spanning 300 kilometers, the Pekoe Trail guides hikers on a 22-stage odyssey through the breathtaking Central Highlands of Sri Lanka. Beginning in Kandy and ending in Nuwara Eliya, the trail winds through the stunning landscapes of Haputale, Hatton and Ella, offering a unique trekking adventure that stands unparalleled in the region.
The Pekoe Trail is the brainchild of adventurer Miguel Cunat, who spent many years hiking in the central highlands of Sri Lanka. His expertise was developed with the generous support and funding of the European Union (EU) with additional support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry is once again on a growth path after facing the challenges posed by the global pandemic and the economic crisis that followed. The steady growth in tourist arrivals to the country making Sri Lanka closer to achieving its tourist arrival targets for this year. This growth has resulted in the expansion of business/investment opportunities in the tourism industry, especially in the leisure and hospitality sectors. With Sri Lanka being promoted in new tourist source markets while being called a must visit destination for tourists by international media outlets, the country’s business potential continues to be on a growth path. Realizing this potential many international leisure and hospitality brands have expressed interest in entering the country’s tourism industry. Local businesses in the industry are currently engaged in expansion and refurbishment programmers to meet the growing demand. The government of Sri Lanka has also allocated a considerable amount of funds for the development of the tourism industry including the development of supplementary infrastructure facilities required by the industry. Given the expanding opportunities in the tourism industry, foreign businesses/investors could confidently explore the growing business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.
