Sri Lanka’s national carrier becomes first international airline to fly to Melbourne, Australia

Sri Lanka’s national carrier, SriLankan Airlines, has reportedly become the first international carrier to operate a flight to Melbourne in Australia following the Covid 19 pandemic.

Foreign news agency Reuters has described the first ever international flight in five months will test the state of Victoria’s revamped hotel quarantine system.
Since March, Australia had closed its borders to non-citizens, but airports serving Melbourne, Victoria’s capital, stopped accepting any arrivals in late June after an outbreak of COVID-19 that began at two hotels where arrivals were quarantined.
Over 20,000 infections were recorded in Victoria when hotel staff contracted the virus from people returning from overseas. The outbreak had been widely blamed on failures of private contractors to follow protocol.
With hundreds of people expected to arrive in Victoria each week, State Authorities have said police officers will now enforce stricter standards.
The new system will greet Australians arriving on a flight from Sri Lanka, who will now no longer be allowed to leave their rooms under the new hotel quarantine restrictions.
The system is similar to the model used in Sydney, capital of New South Wales (NSW), Australia’s largest state, which has accommodated thousands of people returning without any clusters emerging.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s national carrier continuously maintained operations of several chartered flights during the period of the global Covid 19 pandemic. The operations and safety standards maintained by the airline helped it continue operating a limited number of charter as well as cargo flights. Sri Lanka’s national carrier has been looking for foreign investments to upgrade its operations. Foreign businesses/investors could explore opportunities in Sri Lanka’s aviation business. Also, Sri Lanka’s geographical positioning in the Indian Ocean and the many trade agreements as well as trade concessions enjoyed by the country have made it a business hub in the South Asian region. This in turn will boost Sri Lanka’s aviation industry.
