Sri Lanka’s key conference and exhibition facility to undergo Rs. 300 million upgrade

Sri Lanka’s main conference and exhibition facility, the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), located in the country’s commercial capital Colombo is to undergo an Rs.300 million upgrade.
Director General of BMICH, Sunil Dissanayake has told the Business Times that the money would be allocated for the upgrading of the facility including purchasing new equipment and refurbishing the centre during the course of this year.
He has stated that they would be replacing outdated equipment and that the entire facility will be re-carpeted.
He has explained that the sound system would be upgraded to meet today’s requirements and they would also be investing a further Rs. 80 million to purchase new generators to the conference facility. The famous Nuga Sevana at the BMICH premises is to be upgraded and during this time the Nuga Sevana will remain closed for a period of six months in 2020, Dissanayake has said.
At present the conference and exhibition facility has 23 indoor venues and 12 outdoor venues and will be playing host to one of the biggest events since the Non Aligned Summit in Colombo, the CITIES or the global wildlife conference scheduled to commence later this year.

The modernization of Sri Lanka’s key exhibition and conference facility is an indication of the country’s focus on promoting it as a MICE destination in the South Asian region. Sri Lanka has already hosted several international confabs in the country.
