Sri Lanka’s IT industry to expand in to artificial intelligence to become a knowledge hub

The information technology industry in Sri Lanka is reportedly looking at expanding deeper into artificial intelligence in order to use its strengths to support a goal of becoming a knowledge hub.
“It is important for us to expand the knowledge of AI and related technologies throughout the population of Sri Lanka, as the country is progressing rapidly, and it is a crucial contribution to Sri Lanka’s ambitious target of becoming a hub for knowledge and innovation,” Sri Lanka Association for Software and Services Companies, Chairman, Ranil Rajapakse has been quoted in the local media as saying.
‘..If we are to further its development, we are also required to concentrate on moving up the value chain to add high value and bring in more revenue to the industry.”
He has made these observations recently at the AI Asia Summit, which was an industry forum held in Colombo.
This year’s summit had expressively provided a forum for the most recent advances in artificial intelligence, predominantly in emerging AI application and research whilst event featured and local as well as international speakers have shared their experience on AI and emerging trends, local media reports stated.
Norwegian Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Trine Jøranli Eskedal addressing the forum has said that the Norwegian Embassy in Sri Lanka had signed a two year agreement with the Sri Lanka Association for Software and Services Companies (SLASSCOM) to foster collaboration with the ICT industry.
“It is important for us to expand the knowledge of AI and related technologies throughout the population of Sri Lanka, as the country is progressing rapidly and it is a crucial contribution to Sri Lanka’s ambitious target of becoming a hub for knowledge and innovation,” Ambassador Trine Jøranli Eskedal has said.

OSL take:

Sri Lankan authorities are also focussed on further developing the application of artificial intelligence in the country. Attention is also being paid to transforming the country into an e-economy. All these have resulted in the expansion of business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s ICT sector.
