Sri Lanka’s Coast Conservation Department to address soil erosion problem in the southern beaches
The Coast Conservation Department (CCD) of Sri Lanka has reportedly been working on assisting hotels and other establishments affected by the erosion of beaches taking place in the southern part of the country.
CCD Director General, Prabhath Chandrakeerthi has told the Business Times that the Department was assisting hotels that have been in touch with the CCD over the soil erosion problem in the south.
He has told the media that currently at least two hotels in Hikkaduwa had informed the CCD of the dangers of soil erosion and its impact on the hotels.
In this respect, the CCD has already been engaged to protect the sites and were also looking at a similar problem in other areas like Marawila and Chilaw, reports state.
“We are doing some emergency work and protecting the properties,” Chandrakeerthi has explained.
The CCD DG has said that in other developments following the demolition of unauthorised structures on the coastal belt of Weligama they were also pursuing a similar concern in Negombo.
OSL take:
The move by Sri Lanka’s Coast Conservation Department to address the issue of soil erosion in the country’s southern beaches is an opportunity for foreign companies engaged in environment conservation projects to present a solution to the Sri Lankan authorities to overcome the soil erosion problem. Such companies could formulate a programme that would prevent the erosion of soil in the southern coastal areas as well as remedy the damage that has already been caused.
