Sri Lanka’s apparel sector to continue operations despite lockdown
Sri Lanka’s apparel industry has expressed the support of the country’s apparel industry to maintain the growth momentum of the country manufacturing and exports sectors. The Joint Apparel Associations Forum (JAAF) has told the local media that the local apparel industry remains committed to support the Sri Lankan government by continuing their manufacturing process amidst the ongoing Covid-19 lockdown.
“We have been working with the Government throughout to protect our workforce. We are hopeful that within the next couple of weeks, we will be able to administer the balance vaccinations for our workers. In this context, we have decided to continue with our manufacturing processes to meet the requirements of buyers,” JAAF Secretary-General Tuli Cooray has been quoted as telling journalists.
JAAF has assured that all health guidelines have been taken to ensure safety, where 53% of the apparel factory workers have received both jabs against Covid-19 and 74% with the first dose.
Sri Lanka’s apparel exports, according to the Exports Development Board (EDB), have continued to record an increase.

Sri Lanka’s apparel industry has shown great resilience despite challenges posed by the Covid 19 pandemic. The local apparel industry has shown a continuous growth and is committed to further strengthening the sector by ensuring a successful vaccination programme of the manufacturing sector employees as well as continuing operations amidst Covid 19 lockdowns. The many trade agreements and concessions enjoyed by the country have helped boost Sri Lanka’s apparel exports industry. The government of Sri Lanka is also working on setting up a dedicated fabric manufacturing park in the country that would further boost the apparel industry. Foreign businesses/investors could therefore confidently explore opportunities in Sri Lanka’s manufacturing and exports sectors.
