Sri Lankan President’s National Economic Council to present new economic programme next week
A National Economic Council led by the Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena is to come up with what is termed as a “new economic programme” by next week.
The President’s Media Unit has made this observation in a statement issued after the Council meeting in which Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and other officials also participated.
“During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on the rapid changes required in the country and short term and long term programmes needed to be implemented and the decision to be taken to speed up economic development,” the Media Unit statement said.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Ministers Sarath Amunugama, Nimal Siripala de Silva, Mangala Samaraweera, John Senevirathne, Sajith Premadasa, Rauff Hakeem, Malik Samarawickrama, Faizer Mustapha, Navin Dissanayake were present at the meeting.
General Secretary of the National Economic Council, Lalith Samarakoon, Governor of the Central Bank Indrajit Coomaraswamy, President’s Secretary Austin Fernando, Prime Minister’s Secretary Saman Ekanayake, Cabinet Secretary Sumith Abeysinghe, Finance Secretary R.H.S Samaratunga and Secretary to the Ministry of National Policies K. D.S. Ruwanchandra also participated in the meeting.

The move by the National Economic Council to present a new economic programme including short and long term programmes would provide further direction to Sri Lanka’s economy, which is on an upward trajectory. The government’s target of expediting economic development would definitely make Sri Lanka an attractive destination do business as well as for investments.
