Sri Lankan Mango varieties take centre stage in Bahrain

Newswire: Sri Lankan mangoes took centre stage at Bahrain’s vibrant Mango festivals this May and June, featured prominently by two of the country’s largest Supermarket chains, Lulu Hypermarket and Al Jazira.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Bahrain, as part of its economic diplomacy initiatives, has been actively encouraging leading Bahraini retailers to source fresh mangoes and other fruit varieties from Sri Lanka.

According to the Sri Lankan Embassy, LuLu hypermarket at The Avenues launched the Mango season on 23rd May with its lively “Mango Mania” inauguration celebrating diverse mango varieties from around the world.

Sri Lankan mangoes were once again thrust into the spotlight at Al Jazira Supermarket’s inaugural event on 4 June – “The Great Mango Football Fiesta”.

Alongside Sri Lanka’s fruit, Mangoes from India, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines were also showcased.

A highlight of the Al Jazira festival was a Live cooking demonstration also featuring Sri Lankan cuisine prepared with Sri Lankan mangoes.

Complementing this were product stands displaying Ceylon Tea brands, further promoting the best of Sri Lanka’s exports.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s agriculture export sector is steadily positioning itself as a compelling entry point for foreign businesses/investors seeking exposure to high-quality tropical produce and emerging Asian trade corridors. Recent showcases such as Sri Lankan mangoes featured at Bahrain’s vibrant mango festivals, promoted through major retail chains like Lulu Hypermarket and Al Jazira Supermarket, highlight the growing international appetite for Sri Lankan fruit and value-added agricultural products. At the heart of this momentum is Sri Lanka’s strategic focus on expanding and diversifying its export base beyond traditional commodities. The country’s fertile agricultural zones, year-round production capacity, and established reputation for premium tropical fruits, spices, tea, and coconut-based products provide a strong foundation for scalable export-oriented investment. Improved logistics links and trade agreements with key markets in the Middle East, Europe, and Asia are further reducing barriers for foreign entry and distribution partnerships. For foreign businesses/investors, opportunities span across the entire value chain: from plantation development and contract farming to cold-chain logistics, food processing, packaging innovation, and branded export ventures. There is also rising potential in traceable, organic, and sustainability-certified produce, which aligns with global consumer trends and premium market segments. As global demand shifts toward authentic, origin-based food products, Sri Lanka’s agriculture export sector is emerging as a high-potential hub where foreign capital, technology, and distribution expertise can integrate with local production strengths to unlock long-term growth.
