Sri Lankan government’s rural entrepreneurship promotional campaign in North Central Province this week

The rural entrepreneurship programme carried out by the government of Sri Lanka – Gamperaliya programme (Enterprise Sri Lanka) – will reportedly hold the next exhibition and workshop in the North Central provincial city of Anuradhapura from Wednesday (24).
“In Sri Lanka entrepreneurs as a share of the working population is about 3 percent,” Sri Lanka’s State Minister for Finance Eran Wickremeratne has told the media.
“It is about 11 percent in Bangladesh and over 20 percent in Vietnam.”
Wickremeratne has been quoted as saying that on public days, many people came to seek jobs and a majority of them wanted government jobs, but no one wanted help to start a business.
However, the government’s Enterprise Sri Lanka exhibition aims to create at least 2000 new businesses with credit facilities and technical help.
Accordingly, advice will be available to budding entrepreneurs on export markets and business skills.
The Minister has said that a similar exhibition is Moneragala last August had led to 5,175 new businesses. There were 640 stalls and over 500,000 persons visited the exhibition.
The current exhibition will have over 500 stalls.
According to reports, the exhibition will also have an education element as well.

The government of Sri Lanka has launched several programmes to boost the country’s SME sector simultaneous to the development agenda that is currently ongoing in all parts of the island. Sri Lanka’s economic policies have been hailed by multilateral financial institutions that have claimed the country is on the right path. Also, the country’s economic indicators are also on a positive path despite the setback suffered in the aftermath of the Easter Sunday attacks. The economic engagement with the rural population in Sri Lanka would result in a vibrant economy with expanded business/investment opportunities for foreign businesses/investors to enter Sri Lanka’s economy.
