Sri Lankan government to set up temperature controlled storage facility in Dambulla to reduce post harvest losses
The government of Sri Lanka in a bid to reduce post harvest losses through the proper storage of farm produce is looking at setting up a temperature controlled storage facility at Dambulla.
According to reports, the cold storage unit is to be set up with Indian support.
The joint proposal by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in his capacity as the Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs and Patali Champika Ranawaka, Minister of Megapolis and Western Development was presented to the Cabinet of Ministers.
Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has this week approved the proposal.
Post harvest losses of fruits and vegetables in Sri Lanka are estimated as high as 40 percent because of the lack of proper storage and transportation facilities and flawed packaging, reports state.

Official statistics of the Sri Lankan government has indicated a continuous growth in the country’s agriculture sector. The government is also looking at methods to increase the output of agriculture produce while minimizing wastage. The proposed temperature controlled storage facility is one such endeavor.
