Sri Lankan government promotes use of sea sand in construction work

Sri Lanka’s Urban Development and Housing Ministry has expedited the process of preparing sea sand from the Muthurajawela sand yard to be used in the country’s construction industry.
Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Urban Development and Housing has instructed the implementation of the project.
Accordingly, the Sri Lanka Land Development Corporation (SLLDC) has noted that the latest move of preparing sea sand to be used in construction work will help protect river banks and riverbeds from excessive sand mining.
The sand piled up at Muthurajawela was subjected to tests recently and test reports have confirmed that the sea sand was in the same condition as river sand.
The existing stock of sand in the Muthurajawela sand yard is now being sold under two categories, washed sand and unwashed sand.

OSL take:

The ongoing aggressive development programme in Sri Lanka has opened up many business/investment opportunities as well as opportunities in providing technical expertise and raw materials. Sri Lanka is emerging as a hub in the South Asian region and the development programme is essential to take the country closer to achieving this target. While all key economic sectors in the country are undergoing an expansion, the largest expansion is viewed in the construction industry. Given the growing opportunities in Sri Lanka, foreign businesses/investors could explore the island’s business potential.
