Sri Lankan government decides to build fourth 300 MW coal power plant
The Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has reportedly agreed to a proposal to build a fourth 300 Mega Watt coal power plant in the country’s western coast.
Sri Lanka’s Government Information Department has announced that the plant is expected to be built in Norochcholai, which is the same location as the three existing coal plants.
According to reports, the plant is proposed in line with a 2018-2037 long term generation plan of state-run Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
The government has so far delayed a 500 Mega Watt coal plant in Trincomalee which was earlier scheduled to have been built as a joint venture with India, resulting in a delay in tendering contractors for the power plant.
OSL take:
The looming power crisis in Sri Lanka has created many business/investment opportunities in the country’s power and energy sector. Foreign businesses/investors could therefore explore business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s power and energy sector.
