Sri Lankan apparel conglomerate Hirdaramani deploys new software to cut waste
One of Sri Lanka’s leading apparel conglomerates, Hirdaramani, has reportedly deployed new quality management software developed by a group IT start-up that cuts waste and improves planning across the multinational’s network of factories.
Samath Fernando, Hirdaramani’s Chief Information Officer and Chief Executive of its H One Information Technology start-up, has been quoted in the local media as saying that the Res.Q quality management software they developed is the first step to ‘smart factories’ in the group.
Hirdaramani group, with annual sales of US$ 900 million, has apparel plants in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Vietnam and Ethiopia, employing about 60,000 people.
Fernando has noted that Res.Q, which has language localisation capability, is being deployed in group factories including overseas, and also being sold as a cloud-based subscription service to others.
According to him, the software has the potential to be used in other similar industries like shoe manufacturing and software gives data-driven, real-time insights into apparel manufacturing processes across its far-flung factories.
The software helps to cut defect rates and improve efficiency, helping manufacturers save money, the local media has reported.
“We suddenly started capturing data in real time, with data visualization coming on the shop floor, on TVs and SMS alerts. For example, we are able to see which production lines have the highest defect rates. Predictive analytics is going to be key,” Fernando has said, adding, “People used to looking at data the next day, are now able to see what happened in the last 10 minutes, even in say a factory in Vavuniya. That’s the power of the software.”
