Sri Lanka unveils ‘Ceylon Spice’ at the world’s largest food and beverage exhibition in Germany

Sri Lankan authorities have officially unveiled ‘Ceylon Spice’ at Anuga 2019, which is the world’s largest food and beverage exhibition, held in Cologne Germany earlier this month.
The event was attended by Nalin Bandara, Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade, Madurika Weninger, Consul General of the Sri Lanka Consulate Frankfurt, Indira Malwatte, Chairperson and Chief Executive of Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), international buyers, Sri Lankan exporters, media as well as journalists.
Spices and concentrates sector has been identified as a priority sector under Sri Lanka’s National Export Strategy (NES) for export promotion and it states that “to become globally recognized as an innovative player in the value added spice market segment” is one of the strategic objectives.
Accordingly, branding of spices has been recognized as a priority action in the NES to achieve an export target of US$ 880 million from the spices and concentrate sector by 2022.
The EDB together with the members of the Spice Council, SAPTA and relevant government institutions has developed this National Trademark for Sri Lankan Spices and the trademark supports growers, processors and manufacturers by helping them to clearly identify their products as Sri Lankan-made, the local media has reported.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s exports sector has been on a growth path during the past few months and authorities as well as stakeholders have taken many steps to further boost the sector, especially through the spice industry. The unveiling of the masterbrand would undoubtedly help further promote Sri Lankan spices in the global market. Sri Lanka enjoys trade agreements as well as trade concessions with many countries making it easier for local products, especially spices be competitive in the global market. Foreign businesses could therefore confidently explore business opportunities in Sri Lanka’s exports sector.
