Sri Lanka to produce several types of fertilizer for the local market

Sri Lanka’s Presidential Task Force on Economic Revival is currently exploring the possibility of supplying several major types of fertilizer required by the local market within the next three years.

Chairman of the Task Force, Basil Rajapaksa has reportedly said that several universities including the University of Sri Jayawardenepura have conducted research on locally producing fertilizer.

Issuing a statement, the President’s Media Division (PMD) has stated that researches have confirmed that the domestic demand for Single Superphosphate can be met utilizing the Eppawala Phosphate reserve.

Experiments are also underway to identify the possibility of producing new varieties of fertilizer using nano technology, reports stated.

The Presidential Task Force is looking at this area in response to the call by Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to manufacture fertilizer locally to meet the demand instead of depending on importation.

During a meeting to discuss future activities of Sri Lanka’s State Ministry of Regulation of Fertilizer Production and Supply, use of Chemical Fertilizers and Pesticides held at the Presidential Secretariat recently, President Rajapaksa had directed officials to take swift measures to supply fertilizer without any shortage for Maha season.

The President had also noted that the fertilizer requirement of estates and farmers should be met on time in prescribed quantity with high standards.

OSL take:

Along with the programme to develop Sri Lanka’s agriculture sector comes the new business opportunity of manufacturing the country’s fertilizer requirement. Given Sri Lanka’s commitment to set up a process to manufacture fertilizer locally, foreign businesses/investors exploring opportunities in Sri Lanka could invest in the production of agriculture fertilizer.
