Sri Lanka and Philippines strengthen ties by signing five memoranda of understanding

The governments of Sri Lanka and Philippines have further strengthened bilateral relations between the two countries by signing five Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) covering key sectors like education, tourism, agricultural and economic corporation.
Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena arrived in Philippines on Tuesday (15) for a five-day State visit following an invitation extended by Philippines President of Rodrigo Duterte.
The two leaders have held bilateral discussions followed by the signing of five key MOUs between Sri Lanka and Philippines.
During the official tour, President Sirisena also visited the Asian Development Bank (ADB) headquarters in Manila and the International Rice Research Institute in Los Baños.
In addition, the President held bilateral discussions with the ADB President Takehiko Nakao and signed three loan agreements with the Bank.
Sri Lanka and Philippines enjoy friendly and cordial relations and diplomatic relations between the two states were established in 1961 with the Government of the Philippines opening a legation in Colombo.

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena’s five day official tour of the Philippines and the signing of five MOUs would result in further strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations. It would undoubtedly boost trade links between the two countries as well. Therefore, businesses from the Philippines could explore investment opportunities in Sri Lanka and vice versa. Also, foreign businesses/Investors engaged business ventures in Sri Lanka could look at doing business with the Philippines from Sri Lanka.
