Sri Lanka looks for investors for land in the heart of Colombo
EconomyNext: Sri Lanka will call for investment proposals for a land on Maradana Road, Colombo 10, belonging to the Urban Development Authority (UDA), on a 50-year lease basis, minister Nalinda Jayatissa said.
The land measuring 1 acre, 1 rood, 12.4 perches, is proposed to be used for a new invention/information technology-related, mixed development project, he said.
“Cabinet approved the proposal to invite investment proposals from investors interested in developing the land as a production hub for intellectual technological products and services targeting the local market,” Jayatissa told reporters.
OSL take:
Sri Lanka is opening a new door for long-term investment with plans to invite proposals for a prime land parcel on Maradana Road in Colombo 10. The property, owned by the UDA, will be offered on a 50-year lease, creating a rare opportunity for developers and technology-focused investors to establish a lasting presence in the heart of Colombo. Spanning over an acre, the site is earmarked for a mixed-use project centered on innovation and information technology. This aligns closely with Sri Lanka’s broader push toward a knowledge-based economy, where digital infrastructure, startups, and tech-enabled services are expected to play a leading role. With government backing and a strategic urban location, the project has the potential to become a hub for research, entrepreneurship, and commercial activity. For foreign businesses/investors, this initiative reflects a wider trend of Sri Lanka actively seeking international partnerships to accelerate its development agenda. The country’s ongoing infrastructure improvements, urban regeneration efforts, and policy focus on investment facilitation make it an increasingly attractive destination as an emerging business destination in South Asia. Projects like this not only promise commercial returns but also offer a chance to participate in shaping the next phase of Sri Lanka’s economic transformation.
