Sri Lanka launches country-of-origin trade mark for spices sector in Germany

Sri Lanka has reportedly launched its country-of-origin trade mark for the spices sector in Germany last Sunday (6) during the Anuga 2019 International Food and Beverages Trade Fair held in Cologne, Germany, Sri Lanka’s Export Development Board (EDB) has stated in a press release.
The ANUGA Trade Fair held from 5 – 9 of October 2019 is the largest Trade Show for Food and Beverages in the world with over 40 leading companies from Sri Lanka participating in the trade fair which was attended by over 7,000 companies from over 100 countries in the food and beverages sector.
Sri Lankan companies met with potential international buyers during this very significant Global Exhibition for Food and Beverages, the press release has noted.
The ‘Ceylon Spices’ Masterbrand has a distinct position, personality, promise and visual and verbal system and all qualifying spices will use the same name, colours and ‘Born in Sri Lanka’ tagline, the EDB has further stated.
The brand logo would carry the Lion placed inside the Sri Lanka Flag with the wordings ‘Ceylon Spices’ followed by ‘Born in Sri Lanka’ tagline.
The Sri Lanka Pavilion was inaugurated by Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Nalin Bandara, Consul General of Sri Lanka Madurika Weninger and Chairman of EDB Indira Malwatte.
Visitors to the Sri Lanka pavilion had the opportunity to savour the spices and attended the Sri Lanka Culinary Show, the release added.

OSL take:

Sri Lankan authorities have taken many steps to promote the country’s spice exports in the global market. The launch of the latest country of origin trademark would help build a unique identity for Sri Lankan spices in the export market. The many trade agreements as well as trade concessions enjoyed by the country would help promote local spice exports overseas. Foreign businesses/investors could therefore explore business opportunities in Sri Lanka’s spice industry by partnering with local spice manufacturers.
