Sri Lanka to continue with reduced airport levies to promote tourism industry

The government of Sri Lanka has decided to maintain the reduced embarkation, disembarkation tax for the Bandaranaike International Airport at US$ 50, top political sources has been quoted as telling Sri Lanka’s state owned English daily, the Daily News.
Earlier, the embarkation, disembarkation tax was reduced from US$ 60 to US$ 50 in the immediate aftermath of the Easter Sunday bomb carnage after which there was a devastating blow on the tourism industry, the Daily News report has stated.
The decision by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Industrial Exports, Tourism and Aviation Prasanna Ranatunga to appeal to Treasury Secretary Sajith Attygalle to maintain the levy at US$ 50 till April 30 has borne fruition and will stay till that day, sources have said.
If not for the appeal made by Minister Ranatunga to the Treasury Secretary, the tax reduction would have lapsed on January 31, sources have added.
