Sri Lanka attracts Bangladeshi investors and manufacturers from pharmaceuticals industry

Sri Lanka’s State Minister for Regional Cooperation Tharaka Balasuriya along with Sri Lanka’s Board of Investment (BOI) Chairman Sanjaya Mohottala and Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in Bangladesh Prof. Sudharshan Seneviratne had last week met with officials of Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (BAPI) and representatives of Bangladesh’s leading pharma companies in Pan Pacific Sonargaon Dhaka, according to local media reports.
The meeting had taken place on the sidelines of Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s official visit to Bangladesh.
The BOI has reportedly stated that discussions had centred around opportunities Sri Lanka is offering manufacturers to set up manufacturing locations beyond Bangladesh and also opportunities for them to supply quality pharmaceutical products into the Sri Lankan market.

According to reports, BOI Chairman Mohottala had shared with the delegation the progress of the Pharma zone development, incentives and underlined infrastructure that will be provided in the Pharma zone and invited them to visit Sri Lanka under the Investor Bio bubble and explore partnership and investment opportunities in Sri Lanka.
BAPI Secretary General S.M. Shafiuzzaman, Rtd. Major General Md Mustafizur Rahman, Mojibul Islam, MD of Amico Laboratories Ltd., Mosaddek Hossain from UniMed UniHealth Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Md. Halimuzzaman, DMD and CEO of Health Care Pharmaceuticals Ltd., Rabbur Rezza Chief Operating Officer from Beximco Pharmaceuticals Ltd., and other industry veterans participated for this discussion.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s pharmaceutical manufacturing sector is fast becoming a hotspot in the country’s health industry. The government of Sri Lanka has also provided many incentives to businesses/investors in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector. A desiccated pharma zone has also been identified to promote Sri Lanka’s pharmaceutical manufacturing sector. Local authorities are aiming at manufacturing the local requirement for pharmaceuticals as well as for the export market. Foreign businesses/investors could therefore explore business opportunities in Sri Lanka’s pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.
