PUCSL recommends purchasing of 150MW and 60MW emergency power
The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has advised the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to promptly purchase 60MW of emergency power from an expired power purchase agreementand also swiftly call for tenders for the provision of 150MW of thermal energy by the beginning of 2018 in order to mitigate the probability of power-cuts should the country not receive adequate rain.
With the certainty that the CEB has rarely been able to ensure sustained power supply in the country as a result in postponement of introducing much needed power plants, Agrekko, an international energy supplier has continued to maintain its old Colombo power plant conscious of the fact that the CEB will have no recourse but to purchase emergency power from it.
Though it was unclear on payment rates, the PUCSL also suggested the possibility of the CEB running Sojitz Kelanitissa power plant as “open cycle” (gas turbine) despite the steam turbine of the combined cycle plant needing repair.
An additional suggestion by the PUCSL was for the CEB to acquire added energy from self-generation and disconnect bulk customers with on-site generators.
OSL TAKE:
Sri Lanka’s fast impending energy crisis will require establishing additional power plants. This will therefore provide ample opportunities for energy companies to consider investing in the country.
