Port City Colombo attracts $ 2.19 billion in investments to date, says Minister
Daily Mirror: Port City Colombo has attracted investments worth $ 2.19 billion to date, Finance Deputy Minister Anil Jayantha told Parliament recently.
Responding to a question from opposition MP Ravi Karunanayake, Jayantha said the special economic zone, built on the reclaimed land, had attracted 176 investments.
Of the total, investments worth $ 336.67 million have been finalised, while 54 investor applications approved so far this year, he said.
The development has generated 9,871 employment opportunities and currently houses three duty-free retail outlets.
Several local banks, including Sampath Bank, Hatton National Bank, Nations Trust Bank, Commercial Bank and Seylan Bank, have committed to projects within Port City Colombo.
China Harbour Engineering Company has invested in two projects, while another company has committed to a casino project.
The investments in the proposed Asiri Port Hospital and Gateway International Campus are also finalised.
Under the Colombo Port City Economic Commission Act, the commission is required to report to Parliament on matters relating to the administration of assets within the development.
Section 6(1)(aa) requires the commission to submit an annual report covering its operations, revenue and expenditure, along with the audited financial statements.
