Oman encourages Sri Lankan investment as economic ties deepen

Daily FT: Oman has expressed interest in encouraging Sri Lankan businesses to explore investment opportunities in the country, as Colombo and Muscat seek to further strengthen their long standing economic relationship.

The matter was discussed at a meeting held yesterday between Omani Ambassador to Sri Lanka Ahmed Ali Said Alrashidi, Oman’s Adviser for Foreign Trade and International Cooperation Pankej Khimji, and Finance and Planning Deputy Minister Dr. Anil Jayantha Fernando at the Finance Ministry.
The discussions focused on further strengthening the longstanding friendship between Sri Lanka and Oman, with particular attention to investment opportunities and the growing confidence of international investors in Sri Lanka.
Ambassador Al Rashidi commended the economic program being pursued by the current Government and discussed the importance of directing Sri Lankan business interests towards investment opportunities available in Sri Lanka.
Khimji noted that Sri Lankan businessmen have shown a particular inclination towards agriculture-related investments.
Responding to the observations, Dr. Fernando said the financial discipline and transparency maintained by the Government were contributing to greater investor confidence and encouraging international investors to consider Sri Lanka as an investment destination.
The discussions come as Sri Lanka seeks to attract greater foreign direct investment and broaden investment activity across productive sectors.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s economic recovery and improving investor confidence are creating new business/investment opportunities for Omani businesses/investors, as Colombo and Muscat look to deepen their long standing economic relationship. The growing interest from Oman comes as Sri Lanka’s economy moves onto an expansion path, opening opportunities across sectors such as tourism, logistics, ports, renewable energy, agriculture, manufacturing and infrastructure. Sri Lanka’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean also provides Omani businesses/investors with opportunities to participate in projects aimed at strengthening trade and regional connectivity. For Omani businesses/investors, Sri Lanka’s development priorities offer scope for both direct investment and partnerships with local businesses, particularly in areas where Oman has established expertise and international market networks. Joint ventures could also provide a platform for Omani companies to access Sri Lanka’s expanding consumer and tourism markets while supporting export-oriented activity. As investor confidence strengthens, closer business-to-business engagement between the two countries could help transform their longstanding diplomatic and economic ties into a broader investment partnership, creating new opportunities for Omani companies to participate in Sri Lanka’s next phase of growth.
