Maga Engineering gets Rs. 2.6 billion water project in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

EconomyNext: Sri Lanka’s cabinet has cleared awarding a JICA funded contract valued at 628.10 million Japanese Yen (2,660.70 million rupees) for the expansion of the Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project Phase II to Maga Engineering (Pvt) Ltd, minister Vijitha Herath said.

The contract is for laying distribution mains and providing service connections in the Kahatagas Digiliya, Horowpathana, and Rambewa divisional secretariat divisions, aimed at providing safe drinking water to areas currently dependent on unsafe groundwater.

The project is being funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) alongside the Government of Sri Lanka to improve water coverage in the Anuradhapura district.

Herath told reporters that the move follows a selection process initiated in 2022 under the National Competitive Bidding Procedure.

JICA has agreed to the price adjustments based on recommendations from the High-Level Standing Procurement Committee to ensure the project remains viable despite price level changes since the initial bidding, he said.

The second phase of the Anuradhapura North Water Supply Project aims to cover 164 Grama Niladhari divisions across Padaviya, Kebitigollewa, Horowpathana, Kahatagasdigiliya, Rambewa, and Medawachchiya.

On March 30, the cabinet had previously approved similar work for the Padaviya and Kebitigollewa divisions as part of the same initiative.

The project is considered a priority for the region, which has long struggled with water-borne health issues due to the lack of access to treated pipe-borne water.
