Japan to assist solid waste disposal in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province

Japan is to reportedly grant waste collection trucks to the Jaffna municipality in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province in a bid to improve solid waste disposal in the area, which is causing health and environmental problems with the revival of the region following the ethnic war.
A statement issued on the matter has noted that with the rapid growth of Jaffna’s economy since the war ended 10 years ago, 70 metric tonnes of solid waste is generated every day.
“Due to the shortage of waste collection trucks, around 20MT of waste is left without being properly collected, which severely affects the environment and public health in the municipal area.”
Japanese Ambassador Akira Sugiyama has told journalists that four waste collection trucks will be donated by Japan to the Jaffna municipality.
The trucks will be reconditioned and shipped by the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Diplomacy, which donates recycled emergency vehicles from local governments in Japan to developing countries.
“This project addresses an urgent need by enhancing the Jaffna municipality’s garbage collection capacity,” Sugiyama has added.

OSL take:

The assistance pledged by the Japanese towards improving solid waste disposal in Sri Lanka’s Northern Province is indicative of the growing demand for supplementary infrastructure due to the many development programmes being carried out by the Sri Lankan government in many parts of the country. Therefore, foreign businesses/investors could explore business/investment opportunities in the form of providing technical knowhow/supplementary infrastructure facilities in the provinces in Sri Lanka.
