Indian High Commissioner notes strong development partnership between India and Sri Lanka

The Indian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Taranjit Singh Sandhu has reportedly said that India has been able to write the development partnership stories in Sri Lanka based on Sri Lanka’s own priorities and requirements.
The High Commissioner has made this observation delivering the key-note address on “India-Sri Lanka Relations for a Shared and Secured Future” at the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) inauguration ceremony of the Master’s Degree programme for the year 2018.
Sandhu has said that whether it be the rehabilitation of the Kankasanthurai (KKS) Harbour, or setting up of model villages across the country, or helping the farming and fishing communities in the South or extension of emergency ambulance service island-wide, India is proud of the fact that she has been able to write the development partnership stories in Sri Lanka, based on Sri Lanka’s own priorities and requirements.
“This is important considering the strong democratic credentials of both India and Sri Lanka,” the Indian High Commissioner has said.
According to Sandhu, the India-Sri Lanka relations are special, unique and stand on its own footing.
The High Commissioner has also highlighted the importance of higher education and research in the growth of a country. He has mentioned that India currently has the third-largest scientific and technical manpower in the world.
India has also become the second largest market for e-learning with more than one-third of the top 1,000 global research and development spenders having their centres in India and 750 scholarships and 400 ITEC fellowships have been given to Sri Lanka by India every year.
The High Commissioner has added that India, as a country, has never believed in keeping its resources to itself. He said that even while having to confront with its own developmental challenges, India has always believed in sharing what it has.

OSL take:

The comments by the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka are an indication of the strong bilateral and trade ties between India and Sri Lanka. The words also show the level of respect vested in Sri Lanka by neighboring India. These are encouraging signs for any foreign businesses/investors interested in doing business with India to set up base in Sri Lanka. The relations between the two nations are also encouraging for growing Indian businesses to also explore investment/partnership opportunities in Sri Lanka. The two countries are currently engaged in finalizing an Economic and Technology Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) that would further strengthen trade ties that were first bound through a free trade agreement (FTA).
