German investors to participate GBF 2026 in Colombo in May

EconomyNext: Potential German foreign direct investors will visit Sri Lanka later this month when the island nation hosts German Business Forum (GBF) 2026, the state-run Board of Investment (BOI) said.

The GBF 2026 is scheduled to take place in Colombo from May 27-29 in Colombo where the BOI expects to see policy makers from both nations, business leaders and institutional stakeholders and potential German foreign direct investors, it said.

“This is a significant platform to strengthen economic partnerships and unlock new investment opportunities between Sri Lanka and Germany,” BOI said in a statement.

Martin Klose, Chief Delegate of the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Sri Lanka (AHK) and Sulakshana Jayawardena, Acting Chairman of the BOI recently met and had discussions over the upcoming GBF 2026.

As of 2026, the bilateral trade continues to be anchored by the textile, apparel, and rubber industries, which account for a significant portion of Sri Lankan exports to the German market.

German investment in the island is notably resilient; even during periods of local economic volatility, major German firms, representing over 300 brands, have maintained their presence, focusing on sectors such as logistics, precision engineering, and renewable energy.

This relationship is institutionalized through bodies like the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce in Sri Lanka (AHK Sri Lanka) and the Sri Lanka-Germany Business Council, which actively facilitate joint ventures and technology transfers.

The partnership extends into human capital development, with German organizations like GIZ providing critical support for vocational training, ensuring a skilled workforce that aligns with the high-quality standards expected by German investors.

OSL take:

The upcoming German Business Forum 2026 in Colombo comes at a strategically important moment for investment engagement between Germany and Sri Lanka. The event is expected to bring together policymakers, business leaders, institutional stakeholders, and potential investors, creating a focused platform to deepen economic ties and explore new commercial partnerships. For Sri Lanka, represented by the BOI (Sri Lanka), the forum presents an opportunity to showcase priority sectors for foreign direct investment (FDIs). These include export-oriented manufacturing, renewable energy, logistics and port services, tourism development, and IT/BPO services, especially given Sri Lanka’s expanding economy and target of becoming a hub in South Asia. With Germany’s strong industrial base and technology leadership, there is scope for collaboration in high-value manufacturing and green technology. German businesses/investors, meanwhile, can benefit from Sri Lanka’s strategic location along major shipping routes, access to regional markets, and a growing push toward economic reform and infrastructure modernisation. The forum could help unlock joint ventures, technology transfers, and supply chain diversification opportunities, especially as European firms seek resilient and cost-effective production bases in South Asia.
