Colombo Dockyard recommences operations to meet project deadlines

Sri Lanka’s Colombo Dockyard PLC (CDL) Shipyard has reportedly re-commenced operations earlier this month after a brief closure due to the re-emergence of Covid 19 in the country.

The company has recommenced operations giving highest focus to regulatory health guidelines in order to redeliver the ongoing projects at the earliest.

The Colombo Dockyard management has reportedly taken proactive measures to carry out nearly 2,000 PCR screening of the yard team to-date and positive cases are being treated while the first contacts have been quarantined and the situation is being diligently attended in coordination with the authorities.

“Our team has gone to the extent of providing essential support to the relevant hospitals where our employees are being treated. An in-house task force is continuously following up on the well-being of the affected members and families,” a press release from CDL has stated.

The ship repair and shipbuilding teams are housed in special accommodations and health screened/cleared are shuttled to the shipyard for resuming work. “This process will be reviewed for any further improvements as the operation continues and numbers will be increased to meet the production requirements.”

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s businesses have shown resilience despite internal and external challenges posed by the global Covid 19 pandemic. The growth in Sri Lanka’s shipping, ports and maritime sectors have added to the business potential in many private sector companies. Sri Lanka’s geographical positioning in the Indian Ocean and the many trade agreements as well as trade concessions enjoyed by the country have helped the growth of the country’s shipping, ports and maritime sectors. Also, the country’s inclusion in China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) would further expand business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s shipping, ports and maritime sectors.
