Daily Mirror: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake met a senior delegation from China Communications Construction Company Limited (CCCC), led by Zhang Bingnan, at the Presidential Secretariat on 11 August, with discussions focusing on ongoing and proposed projects related to Colombo Port City.

During the meeting, CCCC representatives said the President’s forward-looking policies and programmes had contributed to strengthening investor confidence and encouraged the company to explore further significant investment opportunities in Sri Lanka.

The delegation expressed interest in expanding investments in several sectors, including renewable energy, trade and logistics, and digital services.

The representatives said Sri Lanka has the potential to emerge as a regional hub in these sectors and attract increased foreign investment.

They also assured the President that 90% of the workforce employed in their investment projects would be recruited locally, creating substantial employment opportunities for Sri Lankans.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s growing appeal as an investment destination is receiving fresh attention as major international companies explore opportunities beyond their existing projects. The meeting between President Dissanayake and a senior delegation from CCCC is a case in point. Discussions focused on ongoing and proposed projects connected to Colombo Port City, with CCCC indicating its interest in exploring further significant investment opportunities in Sri Lanka. The company’s willingness to consider expanding its presence comes at a time when Sri Lanka is positioning itself as an emerging business hub in the Indian Ocean. The country offers several advantages for international businesses/investors, including its strategic location along major East-West maritime trade routes, established port infrastructure, a developing tourism sector, a skilled workforce and growing demand for modern infrastructure, logistics, technology and services. The continued development of Colombo Port City could further expand business/investment opportunities in sectors such as financial services, real estate, hospitality, information technology, professional services and international business operations. Beyond Colombo, business/investment potential is also emerging in renewable energy, tourism, logistics, export-oriented manufacturing, agriculture and digital services. For foreign businesses/investors, Sri Lanka’s economic expansion is therefore creating opportunities not only through large-scale infrastructure projects, but also through the wider ecosystem developing around them. If policy stability and investor confidence continue to strengthen, Sri Lanka could increasingly position itself as a regional platform for businesses seeking access to South Asian and Indian Ocean markets. The growing interest from established global companies suggests that the next phase of Sri Lanka’s recovery could be driven not merely by increased economic activity, but by a broader expansion of private investment, new industries and international business partnerships.
