Thailand to explore investment opportunities in Sri Lanka

Ambassador of Thailand in Sri Lanka Chulamanee Chartsuwan has informed Sri Lanka’s Foreign Affairs Minister Dinesh Gunawardena that Thailand has potential to invest in Sri Lanka, especially in the plantation and agricultural sector,
Chartsuwan has made this observation during a farewell call to Minister Gunawardena recently.
Both sides had endorsed the importance of finalising the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) to spearhead bilateral economic and trade relations.
As for trade relations, the Minister has reportedly noted that there is much potential and has expressed hopes that these areas will be rejuvenated and geared through the implementation of the Strategic Economic Partnership which was signed in 2018.
The Thai Ambassador, expressing her compliments to the Foreign Minister, has noted that she has served in Sri Lanka for three years and seven months and feels privileged to have built excellent relations, promoted mutual interests of Sri Lanka and Thailand, and built people-to-people contacts during her tenure.
Gunawardena, emphasising the friendly relations between the two countries, has thanked Thailand for the support extended to Sri Lanka at international forums such as the UNHRC (United Nations Human Rights Council) and BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Co-operation).

OSL take:

Sri Lanka and Thailand are currently in the process of discussing and finalising a free trade agreement. The two countries already enjoy strong bilateral and trade ties that will be further strengthened by the proposed free trade agreement. As noted by the outgoing Thai envoy in Sri Lanka there’s a lot of potential for co-operation with Thailand in the fields of plantation and agriculture. Sri Lankan businesses could look at forming partnerships/joint ventures with Thai businesses in the fields of agriculture and plantation. Sri Lanka’s geographical positioning in the Indian Ocean and the many trade agreements as well as trade concessions enjoyed by the country have made it a business hub in the South Asian region. Thai businesses/investors could therefore explore opportunities in Sri Lanka.
