Sri Lanka’s Vidullanka commissions 10MW solar power plant

EconomyNext: Sri Lanka listed energy firm Vidullanka has commissioned a 10MW ground-mounted solar power plant located in Ranna, Hambantota, the company said in a market filing.

“The 10 MW facility was successfully connected and synchronized to the national electricity grid on 23rd September 2026, commencing commercial energy evacuation under its long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).”

The official and ceremonial commissioning of the facility took place on October 20.

The renewable energy facility was developed and implemented by DPV Solar Energy (Pvt) Ltd, a joint venture company in which Vidullanka PLC holds a 50 percent equity stake alongside joint venture partner David Pieris Group.

DPV Solar Energy (Pvt) Ltd was awarded a recent 150 MW/600 MWh BESS tender, securing an allocation to install a 4.9 MW/25 MWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) integrated into the Ranna facility at a secured tariff.

The formal awarding of the BESS contract remains outstanding, subject to the successful outcome of ongoing technical evaluations and the subsequent receipt of the formal Letter of Award (LOA).

The Ranna Solar facility represents Vidullanka PLC’s eighth operational ground-mounted solar power plant in Sri Lanka, further strengthening the Group’s recurring cash flow profile from long-term power purchase agreements.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s expanding renewable energy industry is creating business and investment opportunities for foreign companies/investors, particularly in solar and wind power generation, battery storage and supporting infrastructure. Joint ventures with established local businesses offer an additional route into the growing market. The Sri Lankan Government’s target of generating 70% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030 is driving demand for international capital, technology and expertise. Ground-mounted and floating solar projects, wind farms and offshore wind development are among the areas offering potential for foreign investors. Recent private-sector developments highlight the opportunities available through local partnerships. Vidullanka PLC’s commissioning of a 10 MW ground-mounted solar power plant in Ranna, Hambantota, developed through a 50:50 joint venture with the David Pieris Group, demonstrates how partnerships can facilitate renewable energy project development by combining local business expertise with investment and technology. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) represent another emerging investment area as Sri Lanka seeks to improve grid stability and accommodate increasing renewable generation. Business/investment opportunities extend to battery technology, equipment supply, engineering, installation and maintenance. Foreign businesses can also explore partnerships with Sri Lankan companies in project development, financing, technology transfers and equipment supply, benefiting from local market knowledge and established industry relationships. The Board of Investment (BOI) has identified renewable energy as a priority investment sector, providing opportunities for international businesses to participate in the country’s evolving energy market. As Sri Lanka accelerates its energy transition, partnerships between foreign investors and local businesses could help unlock renewable energy potential while creating long-term commercial opportunities.
