Sri Lanka’s Tourism Minister appoints high powered Steering Committee for global promotion

Sri Lanka’s Tourism Minister Prasanna Ranatunga has reportedly appointed a high-powered nine member Steering Committee for Strategic Management of Global Promotional Campaign to promote the country’s tourism industry.
The members of the committee are Sri Lanka’s Tourism Ministry Secretary S. Hettiarachchi, Sri Lanka Tourism Chairperson Kimarli Fernando, Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) Acting MD Madhubani Perera, Tourism Advisory Committee Chairman Hiran Cooray, Sri Lanka Association of Inbound Tour Operators President Thilak Weerasinghe, The Hotels Association President Sanath Ukwatte, Tourism Advisory Committee Member Rajitha Dahanayake and Tourism Minister’s Representative Nimesh Herath.
According to reports, the committee is tasked with ensuring a successful global campaign to promote Sri Lanka Tourism by providing the necessary advice to SLTPB for the planning and monitoring process of the campaign.
Industry leaders have reportedly welcomed the move, claiming that there had been no proper global destination promotions during the past six years.
In April 2020, the Cabinet of Ministers had approved a critical five-year traveller-focused and evidence-based global promotion for Sri Lanka.

OSL take:

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry is on a path to recovery after a temporary blow dealt by the global travel restrictions faced due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Following the reopening of borders, Sri Lanka has seen an increase in the number of international airlines operating flights to the country as well as the tourists arriving in the country. Sri Lanka has been listed as a must visit destination by several leading global travel publications and has received the safety and hygienic certification making the island an attractive travel destination in post Covid travel. This has resulted in an expansion in the country’s tourism industry. Foreign businesses/investors could therefore explore business opportunities in Sri Lanka’stourism industry. Also, the planned global tourism promotion will further boost the industry.
