Sri Lanka’s President pushes for renewable energy expansion

Daily FT: President Anura Kumara Dissanayake directed the Power and Energy Ministry to prioritise renewable energy projects, whilst insisting on the need to review ongoing contracted projects and expedite the implementation of those deemed productive.
Chairing a meeting with Ministry officials and affiliated institutions at the Presidential Secretariat recently, the meeting focused extensively on renewable energy, particularly solar panel initiatives.
Highlighting the importance of efficiency, President Dissanayake urged officials to take decisive action against any contracted projects found to be ineffective or unproductive.
The President reiterated his commitment to enhancing accountability in the energy sector while ensuring progress on high-impact renewable projects.
The meeting was attended by Energy Minister and Electrical Engineer Kumara Jayakody, Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board Dr. Tilak Siyambalapitiya, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority Prof. T. M.W. J. Bandara, Chairman of the Lanka Electricity (Private) Company Engineer Janaka Aluthge, Chairman of the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation D. J. Rajakaruna and several senior officials.

The overall economic expansion in the country has resulted in the growth in demand in Sri Lanka’s energy industry, especially in the renewable energy generation sector. Sri Lanka’s commitment to increase the country’s renewable energy component has resulted in the expansion of business/investment opportunities in the renewable energy sector. The growth and profits recorded by local businesses engaged in the renewable energy sector as well as the interest shown by foreign businesses in the sector to enter Sri Lanka are all indicative of the overall expansion in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy generation sector and its business potential. Foreign businesses/investors could therefore explore the growing business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s renewable energy generation and related sectors.
