Sri Lanka’s Pelwatte Dairy to export butter to Japan and milk powder to China
Sri Lanka’s Pelwatte Dairy Industries (Pvt) Ltd, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Pelwatte Sugar Industries Ltd, is to commence exporting butter to Japan and milk powder to China.
Sri Lanka has reached self-sufficiency in milk and that is why we have decided to export butter to Japan and milk powder to China, Pelwatte Dairy Industries ( Pvt) Ltd Chairman Ariyaseela Wickemanayake has told Sri Lanka’s state owned Daily News Finance.
He has said that the company will initially export 50 tons of butter to Japan and 100 tons of milk powder to China and will gradually increase the export quantities.
He has also said that the company had informed the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB) and Sri Lanka’s missions in Tokyo and Beijing to coordinate with the embassies to create markets at that end and added that the company will be participating in Food Exhibitions in both capitals.
According to reports, there will be such an exhibition in Beijing in the first week of November and similar expos in Japan in the future.
Wickemanayake has said that there was a daily production of 250,000 liters of milk a day which was far in excess of the local demand that was why he was reluctantly compelled to look for export markets.
He has further told the media that these exports will also enable to set off trade balances with both countries with the balance heavily weighing towards them.

Sri Lankan authorities are focused on making the country self sufficient in milk as well as export value added products. Sri Lanka’s dairy industry is looking at developing and upgrading its mechanisms. All this is indicative of the expanding business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s dairy sector.
