Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail featured in National Geographic’s ‘Top 20 Travel Experiences for 2024’
The Morning: National Geographic has highlighted the Pekoe Trail, a new hiking experience in Sri Lanka’s hill country, in its Top 20 Travel Experiences for 2024.
This trail, stretching nearly 200 miles, follows the historic footsteps of tea planters from Kandy, providing a unique journey through hill towns and tea estates.
Visitors can fully immerse themselves in the island’s tea culture, participate in cooking classes, and enjoy Ceylon tea along the way.
Funded by the European Union with support from USAID, the trail is being implemented by the US non-profit organization Improving Economies for Stronger Communities (IESC).

The global recognition of Sri Lanka’s Pekoe Trail would give a further boost to the country’s tourism industry that is on a steady growth path recording an increasing revenue. Apart from the tourism industry, the Pekoe Trail also promotes Sri Lanka’s tea industry. The country’s tea industry is once again focused on regaining the world’s number one spot enjoyed in the past by Ceylon Tea. Local tea authorities are also focused of further developing the industry through the production of quality tea that are of high standards, carry out promotional campaigns to expand the foreign market and to further expand the product portfolio. With Sri Lanka’s tea industry once again a growth path with global recognition of the country’s rich tea culture, there’s a growth in the business/investment opportunities in the industry. Given the growth and business potential in the local tea industry, foreign businesses/investors could confidently explore the expanding opportunities in the industry. Foreign businesses could also look at forming partnerships or joint ventures with local businesses engaged in the industry with the aim of further expansion.
