Sri Lanka’s Export Development Board promotes Ceylon gems and jewellery in China

Sri Lanka’s Export Development Board (EDB) in co-ordination with the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou has reportedly promoted Sri Lankan gems and jewellery among Southern Chinese buyers.
According to local media reports, virtual business-to-business (B2B) meetings were held on 6 and 7 April between five prominent Sri Lankan gem and jewellery companies – namely Beauty Gems, Gem Paradise, Precision Lapidaries, Zam Gems, and Engelo Gems – and two very prominent Chinese companies in the duty free sector of Hainan Province – China Duty Free Group Co. Ltd. (CDFG) and M/S Hainan Provincial Diamond and Jewellery Co. Ltd.
EDB Acting Director Manoja Dissanayake and Export Promotion Officer Dilsha De Alwis had briefed on the Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery sector while providing a platform for constructive and vibrant engagement between prospective buyers and suppliers to exchange information and envisage future partnerships in the gem and jewellery trading business and its sectors in Sri Lanka.
Consul General of Sri Lanka in Guangzhou Priyangika Dharmasena has reportedly stated that Sri Lanka is rich in gem deposits of which only 20% has been utilized and that Sri Lanka is a reliable supplier of precious stones, including Ceylon sapphires.

The government of Sri Lanka is also committed to uplifting and developing the gem and jewellery industry in the country. The country’s trade ties and concessions have also helped boost Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery industry. Local authorities are also engaged in promoting the country’s gems and jewellery in overseas markets while also exploring new foreign markets as well. Opportunities for the gem and jewellery industry will see a further growth with the economic expansion in Sri Lanka and the positioning of the country as a growing business destination in the region. Given the growing business potential in the industry, foreign businesses/investors could explore the growing business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s gem and jewellery industry.
