Sri Lanka’s CPA head says country’s education system needs an overhaul to cater to job market
Executive Director of Sri Lanka’s Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA), Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu has reportedly told a seminar recently that the country’s education system needs a total overhaul to cater to the requirements of the job market.
“What kind of country do we want?” Saravanamuttu has questioned during Hatch on June 12 on the topic ‘What is the Vision for Sri Lanka?’
The event was organized by the Night Watchman society and Advocata.
Saravanamuttu has said, “We have according to the private sector 500,000 jobs available. But they cannot be filled largely because the unemployed don’t have the skills that are required. We have twice that amount in three wheel drivers and a substantial proportion (of them) are university graduates. We have to completely change our educational system.”
“We have according to government numbers 25,000 illegal migrant labour in this country and they are working in paddy fields. Not all of them but a fair amount. (It is because) no farmer’s child wants to be a farmer.”

Sri Lanka’s education and higher education sectors are emerging as hotspots for business/investment opportunities. The government of Sri Lanka has shown interest in improving the country’s education structure by introducing new technologies and methodologies in education, especially in the higher education sector. Many local higher education institutions have formed partnerships with foreign institutions. The authorities are also looking at building a skilled workforce for the future. All these indicate an expansion in business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s education and higher education sectors.
