Sri Lankan government to promote boat services for transportation in Colombo
The government of Sri Lanka is to promote boat services for transportation in the country’s commercial capital, Colombo.
This fact was revealed by newly-elected Colombo District Member of Parliament, Madhura Vithanage, who chose to arrive in parliament for its inaugural session on Thursday (20) by boat.
Vithanage took a boat ride to the House via the Diyawanna Oya and said that it was the best mode of transport to travel to parliament, which is situated in the middle of a lake.
He explained that while a boating service was the ideal mode of transport to Parliament, it would also help avoid vehicular traffic on the road.
“The President has introduced the boat service for transportation to minimise vehicle congestions on the roads, but people are yet to adapt to it. However, we plan to promote the use of boats to travel to Parliament in the future,” Vithanage said.
OSL take:
Sri Lanka is currently engaged in looking at solutions to the existing issues related to the public transport sector. Connectivity and transport are key factors that contribute to the country’s economic development. The government of Sri Lanka has introduced a boat service in Colombo as a solution to the traffic congestion on the roads. However, there’s much development that could take place with regard to this boat service, which could also be extended to areas outside Colombo. This therefore is an emerging business opportunity that could be grabbed by foreign businesses/investors keen on doing business with Sri Lanka.
