Sri Lankan government to promote more businesses to Eastern port in Trincomalee

Sri Lanka’s Minister of Roads and Highways, Ports and Shipping Johnston Fernando has reportedly stated that an effective plan is expected to be implemented by the authorities shortly to integrate more new businesses to the country’s Eastern Province Port in Trincomalee.
The latest development project carried out at the port funded by Japan has resulted in the extension of operational times of the Trincomalee Port. The project was implemented with an investment valued at 1 billion Japanese yen, which was awarded by the Japanese government.
The Trincomalee Port is therefore capable of night time operations at present and 95% of this project has been completed up to date.
According to reports, the Trincomalee Port has been utilised by three major companies and two of them are paying only operational costs to the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA).
The Trincomalee Port usually carries out operation related to cement and clinker freight and wind mills were recently unloaded at the port for a project to be implemented in the Puttalam District.

OSL take:

The government of Sri Lanka is working towards achieving maritime hub status for the island in the Indian Ocean. As a result, measures have been taken to develop and upliftment the operations of the ports in Sri Lanka. The Colombo Port and Hambantota Port have been recording a continuous increase in the number of vessels calling at the two ports. The extension of operational hours of Sri Lanka’s eastern port in Trincomalee would further boost the country’s shipping sector. Given the continuous growth recorded by Sri Lanka’s maritime sector, foreign businesses/investors could explore business/investment opportunities in this sector.
