Sri Lankan government to implement National Environmental Management Programme

The government of Sri Lanka is looking at implementing a National Environmental Management Programme.
The programme is expected to include the establishment of centres for sorting out waste, providing incinerators to selected local authorities, providing facilities for enhancing compost yards and setting up of new compost yards across the country.
Accordingly, the Sri Lankan government has stated that the programme titled ‘Pivituru Lanka’ will also include programmes to raise public awareness on the importance of environmental conservation
The relevant proposal was made to the Cabinet of Ministers by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Environment and Wildlife Resources S.M. Chandrasena.
The Minister in the proposal has noted that it is imperative to develop a specific programme to enhance public awareness on the responsibility of environmental management and thereby increase public participation as well as of other relevant stakeholders, including local government institutions.

OSL take:

The government of Sri Lanka has given priority to the conservation of the environment in its development programme. Therefore, the proposed National Environmental Management programme would be given much prominence in the government’s development programme. This would result in the opening up of business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s environmental protection sector.
