Sri Lankan government grants construction of pre-fabricated terminal at the main international airport to Chinese firm

The government of Sri Lanka has decided to grant China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd. the contract to build a pre-fabricated terminal at the country’s main international airport.
According to reports, the government expects the project to be a stop gap solution for passenger congestion until the completion of a permanent building which has been delayed.
The Government Information Department has stated that the Cabinet of Ministers has this week granted approval to a proposal for the contract by Transport and Civil Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva.
The pre-fabricated terminal at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake will handle up to 400 passengers an hour (about 3.5 million passengers a year). Construction will take nine months, reports state.
The BIA terminal now handles double its designed capacity of six million passengers a year.

OSL take:

The Sri Lankan government is engaged in the development of the country’s aviation sector with improvements being carried out in the country’s international airport and domestic airports. The government is also in the process of upgrading the Palaly airport in the Northern Province to the level of a regional airport. Given this scenario, there are many investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s airport and aviation sector. Interested foreign businesses/investors could explore such opportunities.
