Sri Lanka to upgrade digital driving licenses

The Morning: Sri Lanka is to issue a digital driving license that is technologically compatible with other nations, allowing for data transfer of information of persons between government institutions, a cabinet decision issued recently said.
“It has been about 15 years since the commencement of the issuance of a driving license as a smart card, and the government has identified suitability for the issuance of a digital driving license that has been used by several countries going with the new technology and facilitating data transfer between the relevant institutions,” the cabinet decision said.
Sri Lanka first fully introduced digitalisation and computerization of the driving license in 2013, after which the Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) introduced the National Driver Licensing System which integrated both biometric and facial recognition data and streamlined driving license issuance.
More recently in 2020, e-licensing and online applications were introduced for obtaining and reviewing driving licenses.
