Sri Lanka to form target based plan to earn US$ 10 billion revenue from tourism industry by 2025

Sri Lanka’s President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has reportedly called for the formulation of a target based plan to drive tourism revenue to US$ 10 billion dollars by 2025.
The President’s Office has made this announcement stating that the President is focused on cutting un-necessary regulatory barriers that stand in the way of expanding the country’s tourism sector.
President Rajapaksa had met Sri Lanka’s Tourism Minisster Prasanna Ranatunga, State Minister Arundika Fernando and officials including the Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation S M Mohomad, Secretary to the State Ministry of Tourism Promotion S. Fernando.
According to reports, the industry was looking at boosting revenue to US$ 10 billion by 2025 from the US$ 4.38 billion in 2018.
” Every step should generate immediate results. On my part I do not hesitate to take decisions for the benefit of the country,” the President is quoted as saying at the meeting.
“I expect the officials would commit themselves to pass benefits of such decisions onto the public. If there is a target – based plan, every challenge can be overcome.”
According to the statement issued by the President’s Office, attention has also been drawn to amend rules and regulations and to remove unnecessary approvals procedures.

The continuous growth in tourist arrivals to the country and the interest shown by international brands to open hotels in the island are further indications of a continuously expanding industry. Sri Lanka also figures as a must visit destination in globally renowned travel publications. All this has resulted in the expansion of business/investment opportunities in Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.
