Sri Lanka-Thailand to strengthen bilateral ties
The Morning: Sri Lanka and Thailand have agreed to further expand cooperation along the lines of trade, investment, tourism, labour mobility, education, maritime security and cultural exchanges, during a meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Vijitha Herath and Thailand’s Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs Sarun Charoensuwan in Bangkok, an official statement made by the Foreign Ministry said.During the meeting, discussions focused on expediting arrangements for a visa exemption for holders of ordinary passports. The proposed arrangement is expected to facilitate travel, tourism and people to people exchanges between the two countries, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement.The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to deepening Sri Lanka- Thailand relations and advancing practical areas of cooperation for the mutual benefit of the people of both countries, the Foreign Ministry added.

The latest push to deepen Sri Lanka-Thailand economic ties could create new business/investment opportunities for businesses/investors in both countries, particularly by building on the existing Sri Lanka-Thailand Free Trade Agreement (FTA). For Thai businesses/investors, Sri Lanka’s strategic location in the Indian Ocean provides opportunities in logistics, ports and maritime services, tourism, hospitality, food processing, manufacturing, renewable energy and financial and digital services. Greater connectivity and easier movement of people could also support Thai companies seeking to use Sri Lanka as a base for accessing South Asian and Indian Ocean markets. Sri Lankan businesses, meanwhile, could gain greater access to Thailand’s manufacturing, tourism, food, retail, logistics and regional supply chains, while the FTA provides a framework for expanding bilateral trade. The proposed visa exemption for ordinary passport holders could further support business travel, investment missions, tourism and people-to-people exchanges, making it easier for companies to establish partnerships and explore commercial opportunities. The expansion of cooperation in labour mobility and education could also create opportunities for skills development, vocational training and recruitment partnerships, while stronger maritime cooperation could support investment in shipping, port services and the wider blue economy. With bilateral relations increasingly focused on practical economic cooperation, the combination of the FTA, improved mobility and expanded sectoral engagement could provide a platform for greater two-way investment and deeper integration between Sri Lankan and Thai businesses.
