Sri Lanka to revamp underutilised warehouse complex in Jaffna in the Northern Province

The government of Sri Lanka is currently looking at revamping the country’s underutilised spaces and Sri Lanka’s Trade Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena has reportedly instructed relevant officials to refurbish and utilise the warehouse complex belonging to the Food Commissioners’ Department located in the Navakkuliya area in the Jaffna District in the Northern Province.
The Minister had issued the relevant directives during a recent visit to Jaffna where he had inspected the warehouse premises.
“This warehouse should be set up and utilised expeditiously to maintain the stocks required to provide essential goods without any shortage to the people of the Northern Province,” Gunawardena has been quoted as saying.
The Minister has also expressed the possibility of low-cost imported rice stocks being easily distributed through the Lanka Sathosa retail network in the Northern Province.
“The low-cost rice imported by the Government can be transported to Jaffna by train, which can be easily distributed among the public thereafter via Sathosa retail network,” the Minister has further stated.
Minister Douglas Devananda, Jaffna District Parliamentarian and Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee Angajan Ramanathan were also present at the inspection visit.

As part of its ongoing development programme, the government of Sri Lanka is also looking at revamping unutilised or underutilised properties and assets owned by the state. This has opened up a host of new public-private partnership (PPP) projects. Given Sri Lanka’s increasing business potential along with the positioning of the country as a growing business destination in the South Asian region, foreign businesses/investors could confidently explore the growing opportunities in the country. Sri Lanka’s geographical positioning in the Indian Ocean and the many trade agreements as well as concessions enjoyed by the country have also helped boost Sri Lanka’s image as an emerging business destination.
